Gong Gong Gong – Notes Underground 地下日記

In November of 2018 we spoke with Gong Gong Gong. Joshua Frank and Tom NG had just dropped their single ‘Siren 追逐劇‘, and were preparing for a European tour. Before that they’d been on the road with Parquet Courts and Flasher. It’s been a busy few months for the duo, continuing today with the release of the first track from their upcoming album, Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏, which will be released on Wharf Cart Records.

Joshua Frank explains that ‘Notes Underground 地下日記’ was one of the first tracks recorded by Gong Gong Gong. “It kind of just emerged fully formed, before we even had a band name—things just clicked. One of the first times we played it live was in this underpass tunnel in Beijing.”

The track, like all of Gong Gong Gong’s output, arrives with unadulterated energy. It crackles and fuzzes at to the edge. Ng sings in his native Cantonese, and the hypnotic waves of melodic, percussive beat achieve the kind of complexity that can only be experienced through the simplest terms. Tone, energy, and driven time-signatures are key to the work of the band, and here they unlock everything.

Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏 is slated for release in fall of 2019. In the meantime there’s ‘Notes Underground 地下日記’ to play on loop.
