A collaboration between visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite and musician Nick Weiss, (one half of Teengirl Fantasy) PAT is a rare and layered project that resonates on various levels. With a full-length double LP and book slated for release, October 25th on Pioneer Works Press, we’re being teased with a track from the expansive project. ‘We Are In Hell When We Hurt Each Other’ is a sweet, surreal exploration of the space between people.
The project, PAT, takes it’s name from Patricia – Satterwhite’s mother who suffered from schizphrenia, and who died in 2016. Patricia left behind hundreds of hours of a cappella recordings and drawings of household items; toothbrushes, sugar cubes, wet wipes. Satterwhite and Weis mixed and manipulated Patricia’s vocal tracks into their own electronic tracks, inviting other collaborators to contribute to the scheme.
The results are breath-taking. ‘We Are Hell When We Hurt Each Other’. Draws together a range of perspectives. The sounds are granular, disparate, and contrasting, and yet they produce a cohesive whole that is tender, intimate and somehow raw.
Typically, with this kind of magically-real, or surreal endeavor – things made of patchwork and celebrating process – the heart of a piece can be lost. However, each constituent part of PAT leads closer to the heart, it is all heart. The contrasts, the paradoxes, everything – all lead to the image of love, affection and resonating humanity.
The kind of track that demands replay – ‘We Are In Hell When We Hurt Each Other’ sets a beguiling trajectory for the upcoming album. October can’t come soon enough.
