The Hecks – Heat Wave

The Hecks have just shared ‘Heat Wave’ – the latest track from their upcoming album, My Star, which will be released on October 11 via Trouble in Mind.

The Chicago outfit nicely develop the trajectory of their self-titled 2016 debut album. Production leads the Wire-esque drive further into no-wave territory. Distinct lines are smudged and the result is a tone that encompasses an earthy-punk vibe with pleasing funk measures. There’s a timeliness, but also timelessness to the tone.

A synth that pulses with the kind of meter heard in 80’s sci-fi movies, and a vocal treatment delivers a pleasing rigidity lend to the seriousness of the fun.

“When I was younger, and had more confidence” is a line that speaks to the corrosive aspects of staying alive. We’re making it through, but there is a cost. Much of what happens relays a sense of bewilderment. The momentum of living takes a toll – there is a sense of dread, but also a perverse relief of being things ripping and tearing the narrator apart.

Great, disorientating, hypnotic, adult stuff.
